AURORA — Aurora police are investigating what appears to be a high-speed car race that ended with two men being airlifted to hospitals Thursday night.
Initial investigations suggest that about 6 p.m., a yellow Chevrolet Cobalt was racing another vehicle on southbound Aurora Parkway when the Cobalt smashed into a Honda Civic, said Sgt. Craig Baumfalk, a spokesman for the Aurora Police Department.
The Civic, which was traveling north on Aurora Parkway, was hit while trying to make a left turn onto East Commons Avenue.
The impact tossed both cars into the southwest corner of the intersection, leaving a heap of twisted yellow and silver metal.
Both drivers were men and the only people in the cars.
The two, who have not been identified, were airlifted to nearby hospitals and rushed into surgery, Baumfalk said. Their conditions were not immediately available.
Police were looking for the vehicle the Cobalt had been racing.
At press time, police did not have a description of that vehicle.
Aurora Parkway, which had heavy traffic at the time of the accident, was closed for several hours while police investigated.
The driver of the Cobalt and the driver of the car he was racing could face vehicular assault charges.
Baumfalk said street racing is rare in the area.
“We are more familiar with it up north, but it’s calmed down,” Baumfalk said.
Don Dorrough, who lives near where the accident occurred, said the intersection can be difficult to navigate. Motorists often zip through going at least 60 mph, 15 mph over the posted speed limit.
