LAS VEGAS—A ski resort about an hour from downtown Las Vegas is claiming a slim victory over some Colorado resorts in an unofficial competition to be first to open this season.
Officials at the Las Vegas Ski & Snowboard Resort say they opened the slope at 7:33 a.m. Saturday, 27 minutes before Wolf Creek Ski Area opened in Pagosa Springs, Colo.
Early-opening U.S. ski resorts, mainly in Colorado, were competing in a “race to open” on Twitter, although there’s no official nationwide list on resort openings.
The Nevada resort reported nine inches of natural snow and four inches of artificial snow.
Wolf Creek CEO Davey Pitcher says the Colorado resort would be open more continuously for the rest of the season, while Nevada’s resort closed after the weekend until Nov. 25.
