COLORADO SPRINGS — Deputy Police Chief Pete Carey will be the interim chief until a replacement is chosen for outgoing Chief Richard Myers, the city announced Tuesday.

Carey started his law enforcement career with the El Paso County Sheriff’s Office in 1982 and joined the police force in 1984. He was named deputy chief in January 2008.

He has been a supervisor for several units, including the patrol bureau, the Metro Vice, Narcotics and Intelligence Unit and the Major Crimes Unit. He also has been a narcotics detective and a crisis negotiator.

He has a bachelor’s degree in business management from St. Joseph’s University in Philadelphia and a master’s in public administration from the University of Colorado at Colorado Springs.

Myers announced his retirement Oct. 3. He will remain with the department through mid-November.

On Monday, Steve Cox, the mayor’s chief of staff, told The Gazette the city plans to conduct a national search to find a replacement for Myers. He hopes the search will take 60 to 90 days.
