University of Colorado chancellor Phil DiStefano on Tuesday said he would eventually like Boulder’s main campus to be closed to cars.

While answering a question about pedestrian safety at the state-of-the-campus meeting, DiStefano said: “I would like to see this campus in the future to not have any cars . . . and be completely a pedestrian campus. We need to move to that because there are safety issues as we grow.”

In an interview, DiStefano said he envisions off-campus parking and a shuttle system. He said the university, as it develops the east campus, will also need to explore ways to shuttle students and employees to the main campus.

DiStefano said he takes the bus to campus on days that he doesn’t need to drive to Denver and elsewhere for meetings.
