GOLDEN, Colo.—Police say a Jefferson County jail inmate who was fatally shot while trying to escape a medical facility was a suspect in two robberies in Lakewood.

Police in Golden identified the inmate on Wednesday as 28-year-old Jesus Aguilar. He had been taken on Tuesday to a medical facility, where his shackles were removed so he could receive treatment. Authorities say a sheriff’s deputy shot Aguilar when he tried to flee.

Lakewood police had arrested him on Sept. 8, 2010. He had been jailed on four counts of aggravated robbery, two counts of second-degree kidnapping, criminal attempted robbery, first-degree aggravated motor vehicle theft, possession of a weapon by a previous offender and a parole violation.

A team of investigators from throughout Jefferson County is reviewing the shooting.
