An Arapahoe County motor vehicle and driver’s license office was shuttered this afternoon after a single bed bug was discovered at a workstation.
As a precaution, employees were sent home from the office at 5334 S. Prince St. in Littleton and a pest-control company has been called to inspect the office and the rest of the county’s Administration Building, clerk and recorder Nancy Doty said in a news release.
“We want to err on the side of caution and we sincerely apologize for any inconvenience this may cause to our customers,” she said.
If bed bugs are found, the affected areas will be treated. The office is expected to reopen on Monday.
Bed bugs don’t transmit disease, but can be difficult to control. They can easily enter a home or business riding on clothing, backpacks, purses, laundry, old books and suitcases.
The Longmont Public Library was treated for an infestation on Aug. 19. But Macaroni, a beagle trained to sniff for live bed bugs, found more of the insects lurking in upholstered chairs a few days later, requiring retreatment of the library.
A fact sheet on bed bugs is available on Tri-County Health Department’s web site, at .
