An Aurora motorcycle officer narrowly avoided being crushed today by a vehicle involved in an accident on the highway where the officer was working.
The incident happened just after noon, while the officer was conducting a traffic stop on the left shoulder of Interstate 225, north of Alameda Avenue.
The officer had pulled over a Hyundai Elantra, and was standing next to his motorcycle when he heard screeching tires, according to a news release sent out by the Aurora Police Department.
The officer saw a Chevy Tahoe — that had been traveling north on the highway — bounce off the median and heading towards the officer.
The officer was able to jump out of the way as the Tahoe sideswiped the police motorcycle knocking it over and then crashing into the rear of the pulled over Elantra.
The Tahoe finally stopped about 200 feet north of the collision.
When the officer investigated, he learned the Tahoe had crashed into a pickup truck before hitting the median.
No one was seriously injured, but investigations and clean up of the accident shut down two lanes of the highway for about three hours.
Investigators cited the driver of the Tahoe, identified as Richard Cox, 42, of Littleton, with careless driving.
