SAN FRANCISCO — Security was heavy Sunday night at Stanford University as some of Silicon Valley’s elite gathered for a private memorial for Apple co-founder Steve Jobs.

Guards directed onlookers to a parking lot several hundred yards away from Stanford’s Memorial Church, where the service was held.

It was unclear how many people attended, but the San Jose Mercury News reported that people seen entering the area included Google chief executive Larry Page, media mogul Rupert Murdoch and former Vice President Al Gore, an Apple board member.

Also seen, the Mercury News reported, were Chicago Mayor Rahm Emanuel, who had received a campaign donation from Jobs, and actor Tim Allen, who provided the voice for Buzz Lightyear in the “Toy Story” movies created by Pixar Animation Studios, once owned by Jobs.

The service was scheduled to be followed by a reception at the school, some of those who had been invited told The Wall Street Journal.

The Journal was the first to report that invitations had been sent out, but Apple and Stanford officials have not released any information.

The memorial came after Gov. Jerry Brown issued a proclamation declaring Sunday as Steve Jobs Day in California.

Jobs, the mastermind behind popular gadgets such as the iPhone and the iPad, died Oct. 5 at age 56 after battling pancreatic cancer for years.

Sunday’s event was being held ahead of a company memorial scheduled for Wednesday.

A small private funeral was held for family and close friends Oct. 7.
