An accident in Fort Collins sent four people to the hospital on Monday, after a Larimer County Sheriff’s Office vehicle and an SUV collided.

At 11:27 p.m., Larimer County Sheriff’s Corp. Travis Matkin was stopped at a traffic light on southbound College Avenue, according to a news release from Fort Collins police services.

Matkin was stopped in a left-turn lane at a red-turn signal arrow, when he saw a traffic violation. He activated his emergency lights and attempted to make a left turn through the intersection onto eastbound Harmony Road.

As he turned his marked 2007 Ford Expedition into the intersection, a 2006 Jeep Cherokee traveling northbound on College Avenue, collided with the Expedition.

The Jeep had a green light.

The driver of the Jeep, Rasha Alnefaie, 30 of Fort Collins, and two passengers 27-year-old Anwar Alhaider and 19-year-old Zahra Alhaider were taken to the Poudre Valley Hospital with minor to moderate injuries.

Matkin, 38, was also taken to the hospital with minor injuries.

All four were treated and released.

Police are continuing to investigate the accident and no citations have been written. Police do not believe that speed or alcohol contributed to the accident.

The Larimer County Sheriff’s Office will complete an administrative review of the deputy’s actions.

The intersection was closed for about 5 hours while police processed the scene.

Anyone with information about the accident is asked to call Officer Drew Jurkofsky at 970-221-6555.
