Garrett McCarthy, longtime owner of the Old Louisville Inn, has wanted for years to replace the wooden posts in the foundation of his 106-year-old building and renovate the restaurant’s bathrooms so they don’t resemble phone booths.

McCarthy, and dozens of others throughout downtown Louisville, could soon be at the receiving end of a huge financial boost from the city — on the order of $75,000 apiece — to do the work necessary to save their vintage buildings.

The tradeoff: Property owners would have to landmark their structures for preservation and abdicate their rights to tear them down.
