KANSAS CITY, Mo. — Those who wanted a decision sooner rather than later on Missouri staying in the Big 12 or applying for admission to the Southeastern Conference were disappointed Thursday.
The subject was surely discussed in the afternoon at a closed executive session of the University of Missouri Board of Curators. Missouri athletic director Mike Alden was included in that session.
But Alden and the curators took a backdoor exit out of their meeting room at the UMKC Student Union. At that point, a spokesman told reporters no action had been taken and there was no comment to be made.
Curators chairman Warren Erdman told The Kansas City Star earlier Thursday he would not talk about a timeline for such a decision “until the appropriate time.” He said Wednesday night he would “have nothing to say on that until (today). If there is anything to say then.”
The New York Times reported this week that Missouri’s move to the SEC was “inevitable and imminent.”
Big Ten suspends Gholston
EAST LANSING, Mich. — The Big Ten suspended Michigan State defensive end William Gholston for Saturday’s game against Wisconsin after he threw a punch at a Michigan player last weekend.
The Spartans beat Michigan 28-14 on Saturday. Gholston was shown on video appearing to twist the helmet of Michigan quarterback Denard Robinson during a pileup. He also was shown taking a swing at a Michigan lineman on another play, appearing to connect with his face or neck.
“I deeply regret momentarily losing my composure late in the third quarter of last Saturday’s game against Michigan,” Gholston said in a statement. “Although provoked, my response was inappropriate.”
Gholston has 20 tackles in six games this year, and is second on the team with seven tackles for a loss.
Petersen’s wallet likely growing
BOISE, Idaho — Boise State received permission to fatten the five-year contract of coach Chris Petersen.
Under new terms proposed by the university, Petersen’s automatic one-year contract extensions for every season the Broncos win eight games would include a $100,000 raise, double the previous amount.
Petersen’s bonus for earning a BCS berth would increase by $25,000. Under the current deal, Petersen gets a $150,000 bonus for a BCS game and $100,000 for winning a conference title. His total compensation this year will be $1.5 million. That amount increases by $100,000 every subsequent year to $1.9 million in 2015.
Footnotes.
Receiver Matt Snyder, one of four Virginia captains, is scheduled to undergo surgery today on his broken foot. He will be out several weeks.
• North Carolina senior kicker Casey Barth (leg) won’t play again this year and will pursue a medical redshirt to return in 2012.
