Law enforcement agencies are warning the public to be wary of numerous credit-card fraud and phishing scams that have affected hundreds of people in northern Colorado recently.
Loveland police said Friday night in a news release that more than 500 complaints in the last week appear to be related. And the Weld County Sheriff’s Office said it, too, has received numerous complaints.
It is not known whether the crimes are related.
In Loveland, police believe that even though the fraud has occurred recently, the account information may have been gathered months ago.
Loveland police believe the fraudulent credit cards have not been used within the state. The fraudulent transactions have ranged from a few dollars to several thousand dollars, they said. In other cases, Loveland police also have received reports of phishing scams over the phone where automated callers claiming to be from financial institutions ask victims for personal information to confirm an account.
Anyone with information about the crimes may call Larimer County Crime Stoppers at 970-221-6868. Yesenia Robles, The Denver Post
