AURORA — A 9News investigation discovered it took Aurora Detention Center staff 18 minutes to begin CPR on a man who suffered a violent seizure and lay unresponsive in front of a jail-cell surveillance camera. Just over an hour later, he was pronounced dead.

Jeffon Shaw’s sister is upset that jail staff had previously not taken him to the hospital. Shaw had blood pressure of 20 0/154, blood in his urine and told guards he was having chest pains.

“You have this man with high blood pressure. You’ve seen his medical records. He’s got blood in his urine, and he’s telling you guys, ‘I have chest pains.’ What additional clues do you need to see that this person needs help?” said Radiah Shaw, Jeffon’s sister.

Aurora police arrested Shaw, 37, on April 2 after he didn’t show up to court in Adams County on a domestic-violence charge. He was placed in a cell with a camera that sent a live video feed to the guards in the jail control room.
