Denver Health’s nationally recognized chief Dr. Patricia Gabow announced Tuesday she will leave her post in September 2012, for retirement.

Gabow’s departure will trigger a wide search for a successor to stand at the heart of the city’s public services.

Gabow is broadly credited with cementing the agency’s financial health, installing innovative ways to serve the poor, and using industrial process techniques to raise Denver Health’s safety rankings to the top of the nation.

Under her leadership, Denver Health’s main hospital and clinics have regularly hosted showcase tours by federal Health and Human Services and Medicare/Medicaid leaders.

Gabow has to stay away three months after retirement under city rules, but Denver Health officials said they want her back at least part-time as soon as possible in order to help with leadership transition.
