A former Orbitz executive and high-ranking officer at Jones International University has been named president of the online school.

Richard Cox assumed the role of president on Sept. 28, the university said in a news release.

Cox will oversee strategic planning and sustained expansion of the university, where he’d previously served as its chief operating officer.

“Richard has a profound passion for democratizing education and a keen grasp of the technology that enables it,” said University founder Glenn Jones.

Prior to his COO position, Cox had been the school’s senior vice chancellor for student services and support.

Before joining Jones International, Cox was vice president of customer experience at Orbitz Worldwide, an online travel company. He began his career at WorldSpan and stayed for 11 years, finishing as its director of worldwide operations.

Jones International specializes in online classes in undergraduate, graduate and doctoral degrees in business administration, education and business communication.

Cox earned his MBA at Kennesaw State University in Georgia and undergraduate degree from Liberty University in Virginia.
