Two Colorado lawmakers plan to introduce legislation that would create a lottery ticket aimed at raising funds for veterans’ services.

Republican Rep. Marsha Looper and Democratic Sen. Suzanne Williams on Saturday unveiled the legislation, which they plan to introduce when the General Assembly meets in January.

The bill would create a scratch ticket with all proceeds going to the Veterans Assistance Grant Fund. The money would be used to create programs to help veterans with career counseling, mental health and housing assistance.

Looper said tough budget times mean the state does not have enough funds to help veterans.

Other states that have similar lottery programs for veterans include Illinois, Texas and Kansas.
