WASHINGTON—The artist Christo plans to announce a gift of his work to the National Gallery of Art in Washington.

The museum says Christo will visit on Tuesday, along with Secretary of the Interior Ken Salazar, to announce the gift. The museum also plans to present a series of related works by Christo that will remain on view through January.

Christo also will discuss the next steps for his “Over The River” project. It is a 5.9-mile work that he and his late wife and collaborator Jeanne-Claude proposed for Colorado’s Arkansas River Valley. The Department of the Interior approved the project Monday.

The temporary installation would include silvery fabric panels suspended high above the Arkansas River. Christo hopes to exhibit the work in August 2014.
