Fabian Kling scored two goals to lead Fort Lewis (19-1-0) to a 2-1 win over Metro State (14-6-1) on Sunday in the Rocky Mountain Athletic Conference Men’s Soccer Tournament championship game at Dirks Field in Durango.
Both of Kling’s goals came off left-to-right corner kicks taken by teammate Alberto Capdepon-Rodriguez. Kling, who missed seven games because of a knee injury before returning to the lineup in Friday’s 3-1 win over Colorado Mines, scored his fifth and sixth goals of the season.
Metro State’s Marc Herschberger scored the Road- runners’ only goal, an equalizer at 25:18.
Roadrunners goalkeeper Shailer Thomas made six saves, and Fort Lewis’ Ryan Wirth stopped one shot.
Fort Lewis won both the RMAC regular-season and postseason titles for the eighth time.
• The Colorado Mines women’s soccer team claimed the RMAC Tournament championship by defeating Colorado Mesa 2-0.
Alison Oien scored her first goal of the season in the 20th minute off a cross from Anna Evans to give Mines a 1-0 lead. Megan Woodworth scored Mines’ second goal in the 87th minute.
New Mexico women defeat Wyoming.
Playing in the program’s first-ever Mountain West Championship game the Wyoming women’s soccer team (12-6-4) fell 2-0 to New Mexico (11-4-4) at Lobo Soccer Complex in Albuquerque. The loss concludes the Cowgirls’ most historic season, winning their first two MW tournament games and posting a season-best 12 wins.
The Lobos outshot the Cowgirls 15-9 and led shots on goal 10-5. Cowgirls goalkeeper Courtney Merkle made eight saves and allowed two goals, with the final goal coming from an open-net score. Sydney Jones and Allison Masumiya led Wyoming in shots with two.
DU volleyball beats division leader Arkansas State.
The University of Denver volleyball team rallied to defeat Sun Belt Conference West Division leader Arkansas State 3-1 (20-25, 25-20, 25-23, 25-16). DU’s win was its first against Arkansas State since 2008.
