RIFLE, Colo.—Garfield County is salting away millions of dollars from mineral lease fees and severance taxes for a rainy day.

County commissioners are putting $21 million in a special energy mitigation fund to cover the boom and bust of the oil and gas industry.

According to the Glenwood Springs Post Independent ( ), county administrative services director Lisa Dawson says the fund balances reached a peak of more than $112 million last year. She says the money is intended to provide a financial buffer against difficult economic times, such as the current recession.
