Officials say a man with a knife cut the owner of an El Paso County liquor store who fought back during a robbery attempt Sunday night.

Eric V. Richards Jr., 30, is charged with criminal attempt first-degree murder and aggravated robbery in the incident at Discount Liquors, 640 Peterson Rd., according to the El Paso County Sheriff’s Office.

Richards is being held at the El Paso County Criminal Justice Center on $50,000 bond.

The Sheriff’s Office responded to a call reporting the robbery attempt at about 8:15 p.m. “The victim had been cut in the hand during the fight but reported the suspect had sustained injuries and was bleeding when he ran from the store,” according to a release.

Witnesses told deputies that the suspect fled in a silver Nissan sedan.

Investigators located the car at a residence on East Van Buren Street in Colorado Springs. They contacted the owner of the car and found out that those who had been using the car were staying at the Chief Motel, on South Nevada Avenue in Colorado Springs.

Richards matched the description and had a wound on his head consistent with the struggle.
