Taking it to the streets

A sewing competition, fashion shows and other activities will keep shoppers occupied as they wait for H&M to open its doors at Denver Pavilions at noon today. From 9 a.m. to 3 p.m., Street Style will be just that, with Glenarm Place closed to traffic and the shopping district’s plazas hosting events. The big crowd they’re expecting for H&M’s first day, as well as the fact that Denver Arts Week is underway, spurred the center to organize the events, says Wendy Manning, spokeswoman for the Pavilions. Fashion shows from Forever 21, Express, Banana Republic and Gap, with runway models from Wilhelmina, a performance by Ballet Nuevo Colorado, music from local DJs, hair by Matthew Morris’ salon and the makeup team from Bare Escentuals will highlight the parades. Throughout the day, the “Cut & Sew Challenge,” sponsored by the Denver Art Museum, will be hosted by Fallene Wells, a “Project Runway” Season 9 contestant. The museum will present an exhibition from the late French designer Yves Saint Laurent beginning in March and has asked local designers — Melissa May, Trisha Hoke, Heidi Busk and Rachel Marie Hurst — to create an outfit inspired by YSL. The designers have pre-shopped for fabric and notions and will sew their creations on Glenarm Place while the crowd watches. More at or .
