101 ProRodeo Drive, 719-528-4761,

Why visit now: With all the fuss about the National Western Stock Show & Rodeo, it’s easy to forget that ropin’ and ridin’ were once about people, horses and competition rather than subsidies and hotels. A visit to this extensive complex is a good reminder, with short films offering live-action glimpses and a small pen in back that allows recently retired champion broncos to relax and be admired. This is usually kids’ favorite part (ages 9 and over would be most likely to stay focused), and it’s also where they get some hands-on time trying out a lasso, on an iron bull. The displays include gear such as saddles and other tack, along with some great examples of hats and boots, as well as photos of cowboys past and present. Open daily 9 a.m.-5 p.m. Cost: $6 adults, $3 ages 6-12, kids under age 5 get in free. Kyle Wagner
