The third-ranked University of Colorado women’s cross country team tied for first at the NCAA Mountain Region Championships on Saturday to automatically qualify for the NCAA Championships, and the fourth-ranked men’s team placed second, also earning a trip to nationals.
The women recorded 84 points to tie with No. 19 New Mexico in the 6-kilometer race at Provo, Utah.
The men finished just six points behind third-ranked BYU, which recorded 49 points.
Shalaya Kipp led the Buffs and was fourth overall, crossing the finish line in 20 minutes, 59.7 seconds. Kipp was 24.5 seconds behind the winner, UTEP’s Risper Kimaiyo, who finished in 20:35.2.
CU’s Emma Coburn placed fifth overall, clocking a time of 21:00.00.
On the men’s side, Richard Medina and Andy Wacker continued to lead the Buffs. Medina was sixth overall, finishing the 10K race in 30:36.7. Wacker was just slightly behind Medina and took seventh in 30:37.9. BYU’s Miles Batty won the race in 30:09.3.
Metro State falls in volleyball final.
With four starters in a hospital Saturday afternoon battling food poisoning, the Metro State volleyball team fell 3-0 (25-19, 25-23, 25-20) to Nebraska-Kearney in the RMAC championship in Kearney, Neb.
Bri Morley, who was one of the players hospitalized, recovered enough to play and led all players with 17 kills and added eight digs. She earned a spot on the all-tournament team along with teammate Emily Greenhalgh.
