Prosecutors level charges, including felonies, against Occupy Denver protesters

The Denver District Attorney’s Office this afternoon announced they have filed charges against more than two dozen Occupy Denver protesters, including three facing felonies.

The 8-week-old protest at Civic Center and other downtown locations in part of a national campaign to raise awareness of protesters’ opposition to Wall Street and economic disparity.

Twenty-three occupiers were given misdemeanor summonses. Most are charged with unlawful conduct on public property stemming from an Oct. 14 clash with Denver police.

Michael Donahue, 29, was charged with two counts of inciting a riot, a class 5 felony. and one count of misdemeanor obstruction of justice because of an incident last Sunday evening.

Donahue, who has two other pending cases related to the Occupy Denver protests, is accused of blocking a police patrol car from leaving Civic Center and encouraging inciting other protesters to riot.

Donahue also faces charges of unlawful conduct on public property on Oct. 14 and unlawful sexual contact on Oct. 15.

Brandon Sexton, 29, was charged today with second-degree assault on a peace officer, a class 4 felony, and three misdemeanors, obstruction, resisting arrest and engaging in a riot on Sunday.

Police said he grabbed a law enforcement officer from behind, tried to hit and wrestled him to the ground.

Sean Driggers, 27, was charged with second-degree assault on a peace officer, a class 6 felony, for allegedly trying to hit an officer with a stick on Oct. 29.
