Water was restored this evening to 49 homes on Bellaire Street that were without since early this morning, according to Denver Water.

A 24-inch conduit at the corner of 13th Avenue and Bellaire has been repaired and paving crews will work overnight to repair the street, according to the utility.

One lane of of 13th Avenue at Bellaire will be open for the morning rush hour, Denver Water said.

Randall Baum, 50, found out about the problem when he turned on the tap in his kitchen sink this morning, he said. “There was just a drip.”

The utility found the leak Saturday in a joint connected to two other water mains, Chesney said. “We called crews out to the leaking conduit after water was coming up into the street.”

When workers dug down to the pipes they found a break in the 78-year-old cast iron joint. Water was turned off about 3 a.m.

A joint of ductile iron, which is more flexible and elastic than regular cast iron, will replace the old joint.

Workers stopped at Baum’s home about 10 a.m. and told him they were repairing the leak, Baum said.

Baum said he and his wife have bottled water in their home. “We didn’t even have to run to the grocery store.”

Once the new joint is connected with the mains the hole will be filled and paved over.
