A man Fort Collins police shot on Friday after someone reported he had a gun, was carrying a plastic handgun replica designed to shoot plastic projectiles, police said Sunday.
Police identified the man as Scott Mendias.
“When officers contacted Mr. Mendias, they observed a handgun in the waistband of his pants. Officers gave Mr. Mendias verbal commands to keep his hands away from the weapon,” police spokesman Matt Johnson said in a release.
Mendias reached for his waistband and an officer shot him in the abdomen.
He was transported to Medical Center of the Rockies for treatment. A hospital spokesman said he was not listed as a patient on Sunday.
