For a 14th consecutive year, Colorado’s Tattered Cover Bookstore and Reach Out and Read Colorado are joining forces to encourage literacy for little kids.
Reach Out and Read Colorado is a part of a worldwide network of literacy programs that equips medical professionals to encourage parents to read books aloud to their kids from a young age.
Books collected during the month of December at all three Denver-area Tattered Cover locations will be distributed to pediatric clinics and given out in conjunction with annual check-ups to children ages 6 months to 5 years.
For every 10 new or gently used books the Tattered Cover receives, the bookstore will donate one brand new book to the cause.
In Colorado, Reach Out and Read is in 178 clinics in 48 counties and last year they distributed more that 143,000 books. Since the program’s inception, 950 medical providers have been trained in the Reach Out and Read model.
Colorado has an estimated 50 volunteers that read to children aloud in waiting rooms statewide.
