Signage at Sports Authority Field at Mile High will become more prominent under a plan filed with the city of Denver.
The proposal calls for additional stadium name signs as part of retailer Sports Authority’s $150 million deal for the right to replace Invesco as the name on the Denver Broncos’ stadium.
The application for new signage mainly involves the placement of permanent, illuminated signs saying “Sports Authority Field at Mile High” and signs with the Broncos logo on the eastern, western and northern exteriors of the stadium.
Some residents who live near the stadium are worried about the impact the signs will have on their neighborhood.
“It’s going to be on all night,” Rafael Espinoza told 9News. “That’s a lot of hours for us to have to look at an advertisement for Sports Authority.”
Temporary signage at those locations has been in place since the Sports Authority deal was announced in August. Permanent signs already have been erected on the stadium’s south side.
The application, submitted by the Metropolitan Football Stadium District, requires that adjacent neighborhood groups be notified of the proposal. Two meetings with neighborhood groups already have taken place, said Andy Gorchov, general manager of the stadium.
“We want to be proactive and solicit feedback,” he said. “We’ve been in contact with the local neighborhoods.”
The signage proposal must undergo public hearings and subsequent considerations for approval by both the zoning and planning boards of the city of Denver.
Gorchov said that if approval is granted, the signs would be installed by the spring of 2012.
