Junior guard Emiko Smith scored a game-high 15 points, including two free throws with 10 seconds remaining, to lead the University of Denver women’s basketball team to a 53-52 victory over Montana on Monday night at Magness Arena.
Smith went 5-for-9 and had six rebounds, five assists and four steals. Senior forward Kaetlyn Murdoch added 14 points as the Pioneers (6-2) secured their first victory over the Lady Grizzlies (4-4) in four tries.
After Smith’s free throws put the Pioneers up 53-49, Montana answered with a 3-pointer by Torry Hill with less than three seconds to play for the final margin.
“We hit some big 3s, and Emi and Maiya (Michel) opened the game up for us late in the second half,” Pioneers coach Erik Johnson said.
Michel finished with nine rebounds and four points.

Monique Oliver scored 25 points and grabbed 19 rebounds for Rutgers (8-1), which came into the night as one of 15 unbeaten women’s teams left in the nation.
The Scarlet Knights got a layup from Erica Wheeler with 1.5 seconds left in regulation to force overtime and another game-tying shot from Oliver with two seconds left to send it to a second OT.
