FORT COLLINS, Colo.—The former chairman of the Larimer County GOP has pleaded not guilty to a charge of stealing from the party.

The Coloradoan reports Larry Carillo made the plea Monday ( ). A trial was set for April 23.

Carillo faces a felony theft charge that carries a maximum penalty of four years in prison and a $500,000 fine.

Carillo allegedly stole more than $17,000 in party funds through ATM withdrawals, debit card charges for personal purposes, and by writing checks to himself or his companies, according to a Fort Collins police affidavit.

He served as party chairman from 2009 to February 2011. Carillo stepped down after he was confronted by party officials.
