A 34-year-old Evergreen man died last night in a traffic collision on Pena Boulevard when he was thrown from a pickup truck that rolled.
Ervin Wayne Settles II died at the scene from his injuries. The fatal crash happened at about 10 p.m. on Pena Boulevard south of East 40th Avenue, according to an Aurora Police Department media release.
A woman, who has not been named, was thrown from the truck and taken to a local hospital.
Settles’ Ford F250 crew cab pickup was on Pena northbound driving at an excessive speed when it sideswiped a Hyundai Sonata. The Hyundai spun off Pena into an unpaved area, coming to a stop out of traffic.
Three people in the Hyundai were not injured.
The truck, now out of control, swerved right and then slid left across traffic lanes before hitting a guard rail. The truck rolled and the man and woman were ejected.
Police said speed was a contributing factor and investigators believe the pair was not wearing seatbelts. Settles, who was driving the truck, died at the scene.
It is not yet known whether alcohol or drugs were factors in the crash.
