Houston-based Oil States International Inc. said Thursday it will open a manufacturing plant in Johnstown that will employ 249 workers.
The Weld County plant will build modular housing for use by oil and gas workers in remote locations.
Last month, the Colorado Economic Development Commission approved the issuance of up to $2.2 million in state tax credits for the firm if it creates 249 jobs over a five-year period.
Oil States International said it acquired an existing manufacturing plant in Johnstown. The facility is expected to reopen in the first quarter of 2012 and begin production by mid-year.
The modular housing will be used at oil and gas sites in the U.S. and Canada.
“This new facility will allow us to take advantage of a highly skilled workforce in the area and will further facilitate planned capacity expansions in the U.S. shale plays and Canadian oil sands regions,” president and chief executive officer Cindy B. Taylor said in a statement.
Oil States also manufactures equipment for land and deepwater oil and gas production.
Under Colorado’s 2-year-old Job Growth Incentive Tax Credit, employers that add 20 or more jobs paying 110 percent of the median county wage are eligible for state tax credits.
The jobs must originate from a relocation or new project that might have gone to another state.
