HealthONE, the largest health care system in metro Denver, Thursday announced plans to build a behavioral health care unit at The Medical Center of Aurora North Campus next year.

The unit, to be built at I-225 and 6th Avenue, will include a 40-bed sector for adult psychiatric inpatient care. Cost of the project was not announced.

“At one point in time, Denver and Colorado were known for their excellent mental helath services across the continuum of care,” said Dr. George Bussey, chief medical officer for HCA-HealthONE.

The state currently ranks 50th in the nation in pscyhiatric beds per capita. State budget cuts have hit funding for mental health services hard, the release said.
