BOULDER — A record number of low-income seniors are relying on the city’s food-tax rebate program, according to a recent report.
The program is designed to provide assistance to low-income families, seniors and people with disabilities by providing a rebate on the estimated sales taxes they pay on food.
Voters in 1967 approved the rebate program, which provides rebates of $71 for individuals and $217 for families and is adjusted annually for inflation.
While the total amount of rebates issued declined slightly from 2010 to 2011, the city has recorded an increase in the number of low-income seniors taking advantage of the rebates. Of the 780 rebates that were approved this year, 475 were for people 62 or older.
