Charlie Coyle’s hat trick Monday helped the United States pound Denmark 11-3 at the world junior men’s hockey championship tournament in Edmonton, Alberta.
Team USA’s first line of Coyle; captain Jason Zucker, a University of Denver sophomore; and Brandon Saad accounted for five goals. Kyle Rau contributed two goals.
“I’m fortunate enough to play with those guys,” Coyle said. “Saad is a big body and can create a lot of traffic in front of the net. Zucker does everything out there. He blocks shots. He can score. He can pass. He’s a great leader. Playing with those guys makes it easier.”
Mark Stone’s hat trick led Canada to an 8-1 rout of Finland in a tournament opener. Stone also had an assist for Canada. Jonathan Huberdeau contributed a goal and four assists.
Brendan Gallagher, defenseman Dougie Hamilton, Ryan Strome and forward Brett Connolly of the NHL’s Tampa Bay Lightning also scored.
Alexander Ruuttu, son of former NHL player Christian Ruuttu, scored for Finland early in the second period.
Canada concludes Pool B play Saturday with a showdown against Team USA.
