High winds are sweeping down the mountains tonight, and some communities could see gusts as strong as 80 mph before a warning expires at 5 p.m. Thursday, the National Weather Service said.
A high wind warning, meaning that strong and potentially damaging winds are possible or occurring, has been issued for the Front Range, forecasters said.
The National Weather Service earlier said the warning would begin at 11 p.m., but its 9 p.m. update said the warning was in effect.
Winds as strong as 30 to 45 mph will develop in the foothills tonight. The strongest gusts are expected overnight and early Thursday morning.
The strongest winds are expected from Rocky Mountain National Park and the Indian Peaks Wilderness area into the foothills of Larimer and Boulder counties.
“Drivers of lightweight or high-profile vehicles should avoid travel on north to south roads such as the Peak to Peak Highway between Estes Park and Blackhawk,” the National Weather Service stated.
