In the co-main event at UFC 141 in Las Vegas, Nate Diaz (15-7) backed up his tough talk and rude behavior Friday in a fight that had the sellout crowd on its feet as he battered Donald “Cowboy” Cerrone, who grew up in Denver.
Cerrone (17-4) knocked down Diaz at least a half-dozen times with kicks and leg-whips, but Cerrone refused to fight Diaz on the ground, repeatedly allowing Diaz to get up.
The strategy showed respect for Diaz’s ground skills but also minimized the importance of those knockdown shots in the eyes of the judges, who scored the bout 30-27 twice and 29-28 once, all for Diaz.
Eagles sign forward.
The Colorado Eagles signed forward Moises Gutierrez on Friday. An Anchorage, Alaska, native, Gutierrez was a sixth-round draft pick of the Pittsburgh Penguins in 2004. The 6-foot-4, 227-pound forward has spent 104 of his 112 professional career games in the ECHL, registering 56 points (24 goals) and 197 penalty minutes.
