A 38-year-old woman who conned the Cops Fighting Cancer Society out of more $10,000 has been sentenced to 90 days in jail and six years probation.
Julie Jane Martin of Sheridan, Ore., was sentenced today in district court in Arapahoe County.
Martin defrauded the Aurora-based non-profit over a 15-month period starting in 2009, according to the Arapahoe County District Attorney’s Office.
She falsely claimed to have several forms of cancer including leukemia, cervical cancer, spinal tumors, chest tumors and kidney tumors, according to a media release from the DA’s office.
Martin told foundation members that she was undergoing treatment here in Colorado at a local hospital.
Cops Fighting Cancer helped Martin pay for lodging and travel between Colorado and Oregon. CFC also paid for other health-related expenses, prosecutors said.
Martin even had the gall to appear in a CFC video along with cancer victims who told their real life stories, the district attorney’s office said.
In October, she pleaded guilty to one count of theft.
As part of the sentence the court ordered Martin to pay $10,425 in restitution.
