COLORADO SPRINGS, Colo.—A Colorado Springs driver accused in a hit-and-run accident that killed a bicyclist has pleaded guilty to leaving the scene of a fatal crash.

The Gazette reports ( ) 50-year-old Mark L. Doutt pleaded guilty Monday and will serve an eight-year sentence under a plea agreement that also calls for five years of parole after his release. A formal sentencing hearing is scheduled Feb. 27.

The crash in June killed 44-year-old William Byas Jr.

Doutt told a judge he had consumed just one alcoholic beverage before driving home from a family member’s birthday party. Doutt’s attorney Dennis McGuire said Doutt drifted off behind the wheel and was awakened by the crash. Doutt said he thought he had hit an animal.
