When a devastating earthquake struck Haiti two years ago, it destroyed what little electricity infrastructure existed — causing massive blackouts and forcing families to rely on high-cost diesel generators.
Families have been unable to work or study at night. The darkness has also led to increased assaults — especially putting women and girls in danger.
A team of University of Colorado engineers traveled to Haiti on Sunday. They plan to stay through Jan. 16 to help set up green energy systems in the country and gauge the residents’ demands for sustainable power sources.
Engineering professors Alan Mickelson and Mike Hannigan and graduate student Matt Hulse will collaborate with the Neges Foundation school in Leogane, a town that was at the epicenter of the Jan. 12, 2010 earthquake.
