Police have arrested a man who they say eluded them in a stolen Ford pickup and then hid in an attic until SWAT team members fired pepper spray into the space.

Guy Dunning celebrated his 39th birthday Saturday in jail. He was being held on a parole violation, said Cassidy Carlson, Aurora police spokeswoman.

He is under investigation for various charges, including car theft and eluding police, Carlson said.

Police also arrested Matthias Roper, 20, who was a passenger in the stolen pickup, she said.

Commerce City police initially spotted Dunning in the pickup and tried to pull him over, Carlson said. He sped away and entered Aurora city limits.

At 8:15 p.m., Commerce City police located the pickup near a home on the 2100 block of Granby Street in Aurora and called Aurora police.

When Aurora officers approached the stolen truck, the driver sped away and escaped.

At 9 p.m., police spotted the pickup as it was stopping at the same Granby Street address.

Two men jumped out of the pickup and ran into a house. SWAT team members were called to the address.

Roper and several other people who were in the home walked out peacefully, Carlson said.

SWAT team members entered the home and tried to coax Dunning to come out of the attic, where he was hiding, but he did not respond, she said.

About 10:30 p.m., authorities fired pepper spray into the attic, and only then did Dunning surrender, Carlson said.
