SAN PABLO, Colo.—Farmers in the San Luis Valley may take tens of thousands of acres of farmland out of production because of the rising cost of water.
Colorado agriculture commissioner John Salazar recently warned residents that agriculture alone cannot sustain the economy of the San Luis Valley, one of the state’s major breadbaskets.
According to the Denver Post ( ), the high cost of water may force farmers to take 80,000 irrigated acres out of production.
