DENVER—Denver International Airport says its new design for its south terminal should cost about $500 million, or $150 million less than the original.
In 2010, architect Santiago Calatrava presented a design that included a light and airy hotel, plus a light-rail train station connected to the airport that together would resemble the wings of a bird when viewed head on. He and the airport later parted ways.
A revised design revealed Wednesday has an altered shape, less square footage, one fewer hotel floor and a smaller train station. Calatrava’s signature white arcs overhead are gone. The airport still plans on having an open-air plaza with new concessions. The 500-room hotel and conference center is slated to open in 2015.
Construction has already begun.
