Wil Alston, who since July has led the communications department for Denver Mayor Michael Hancock, on Friday said he was stepping down to take over communications for the city’s finance department.
“I am not a 25-year-old anymore,” he said. “I wanted to do something with a more strategic focus.”
Alston said the mayor created a position at the finance department, which previously did not have a person in charge of communications. He will earn $85,000 there — taking a $15,000 pay cut — and starts Monday.
Alston said he will be working to develop messaging as the city implements recommendations from a financial task force that has been meeting for a year to help the city find a permanent fix to its perpetually unbalanced budget. The task force’s final report will be delivered to Hancock on Monday.
