Boys basketball players at East spent part of Thursday away from the court, reading to fifth-graders at Southmoor Elementary School, continuing traditions required by coach Rudy Carey.

In an age whenof high-schoolers performing community service is widespread, it was part of various Angels programs such as helping at hospitals or serving food at shelters. “It was cool and every year we make (our players) give back,” Carey said. “It develops core values. Our kids are blessed. We get a lot of help, and we have to give back. It’s a big part of receiving. They need to remember this.”

Hahn worthy of honor. At the winter sports assembly Friday at Class 5A Horizon in Thornton, the Hawks will honor girls basketball coach Greg Hahn. Hahn won his 400th game in December.

Falcons flying high. Connor Healy’s game-high 21 points last week against Heritage kept the Highlands Ranch boys basketball team undefeated (14-0). The Falcons routed Heritage 75-42 in a Class 5A Continental League game.

College pledges. Wes Moon of Class 4A Monarch committed to Princeton for football, and 4A Liberty’s Jake Vieux will play at Western State.
