SUPERIOR —  —A plan to more than quadruple the size of a popular hockey and skating facility — including the addition of a second sheet of ice and multiple indoor turf fields — got a major boost from the town Monday.

The Board of Trustees unanimously approved a development agreement that sets the stage for Superior to dedicate 10 acres of land it owns at the southeast corner of U.S. 36 and McCaslin Boulevard for the construction of a 143,000-square-foot permanent ice and sports center.

“In the hockey world, this will put Superior on the map,” Mayor Pro Tem Elia Gourgouris said to a standing room-only gathering Monday night at Town Hall.

The $18 million facility, which could break ground this summer and be completed by fall 2013, would feature Boulder County’s only NHL-size ice rinks. It would also boast a pro shop, a community room, a gym, a restaurant, a Starbucks and 1,000 fold-down spectator seats like those at the Pepsi Center.
