DENVER—Denver has settled a lawsuit filed by police officers over compensation for duties such as report writing, reading work email, as well as inaccurate and untimely payment of overtime.
Under the settlement approved Tuesday in U.S. District Court, about 850 officers will receive 225 hours of compensatory time off, with about 700 receiving at least 40 hours. The city also agreed to pay $1.75 million in attorneys’ fees, which will be paid in four annual installments beginning in July.
The suit filed in 2007 also alleged that officers should be paid for the time spent putting on and maintaining uniforms and gear. That claim was dropped as part of the settlement.
In court documents, Denver did not admit liability, saying it settled to avoid a lengthy and costly court battle.
