DENVER—Denver police say a longtime police spokeswoman drew her weapon and shielded workers from armed gunmen before one of them wrestled her gun away.

KMGH-TV ( ) reports Friday that Denver police identified the officer as Virginia Quinones, who had been known as Virginia Lopez during her time as spokeswoman. The off-duty Quinones spotted two suspected robbers at a Walgreens when she walked in to refill a prescription. The two initially obeyed her commands before one man attacked her with a milk crate and took her gun. Quinones fired a shot into a wall during the incident.

Police arrested 25-year-old Nicholas Zentz near the scene. Police say 56 -year old Joseph Farina stole a vehicle at gunpoint and was arrested Friday morning in Broomfield.
