DENVER—Metropolitan State College is asking the Legislature to change its name to Metropolitan State University of Denver.

The college’s board voted 6-3 on Thursday in favor of the change.

The school said state Sen. Lucia Guzman and Rep. Crisanta Duran, both Denver Democrats, have agreed to sponsor the bill.

If approved by the Legislature and governor, the new name would take effect in the 2012-13 academic year.

Last year, Metro asked the Legislature to change the name to Denver State University. It withdrew the request after University of Denver officials said it was too similar to their name.

Metro has 24,000 students and offers bachelor’s and master’s degrees.
