DENVER—Beat Generation icon Neal Cassady is getting a high school diploma over 40 years after his death.

Cassady was a student at East High School in Denver in the early 1940s and the school plans to award his diploma on Friday.

Cassady’s school attendance was spotty. The school has his registration card but his transcript has disappeared.

Denver Beat historian Mark Bliesener told The Denver Post () that the diploma idea developed out of a conversation he had with two literature teachers at the school last year. When they learned Cassady never graduated, he said they decided to try to get him one.

Cassady died in 1968.

His daughters, Jami and Cathy, plan to attend Friday’s ceremony.
